Surveillance storage is simpler than general-purpose storage once you know your requirements. Four factors determine the right drive.

Retention time and capacity

Calculate how much storage your cameras consume per day (resolution × frame rate × hours × camera count), then multiply by the number of days you need to retain footage. A typical 8-camera 1080p system at 15 fps writes roughly 1 TB per week. For 30 days of retention, you need at least 4 TB. But 8 TB gives comfortable headroom and costs very little extra per TB.

Camera count and stream support

Consumer surveillance drives like WD Purple and SkyHawk are rated for up to 64 simultaneous streams. If your NVR records both a main stream and a sub-stream per camera, a 16-camera system generates 32 streams. Stay within the drive's rated stream count to avoid dropped frames. What hard drive should I use for a DVR system?

Any CMR drive rated for 24/7 operation will work. Do I need a surveillance-rated drive for my DVR?
