Is This Hard Drive Deal Good? Six Checks and Today's Real Numbers (2026)
The most repeated post on r/DataHoarder right now is not a build log or a shucking guide. It is a person pasting a listing and asking one question:
“It’s £300. it’s 18tb. It’s £200 pounds cheaper than any other similarly sized drive? Is this sensible or will I regret it?”
I counted 17 threads in a single month across r/DataHoarder and r/homelab that are literally that question. Different retailers, different capacities, three countries. And almost nobody answering them has a benchmark. They answer from memory, and memory is badly out of date in a market that moved this much:
“The 12’s usually go for nearly $400. I don’t have much in the way of funds right now, but if its a great deal, I’d try and find the money in my budget.”
That is the whole problem. He is about to stretch his budget for a drive, on the strength of a price he half remembers.
I track the Amazon.com listings, so I can settle it with a number. This piece is the benchmark, eleven real deals from those threads scored against it, and the six checks that catch the ones a price alone will not.
Everything below is measured from the live listings on 12 August 2026: 9,170 Amazon.com listings, of which 438 are known-brand internal SATA hard drives between 6 TB and 24 TB. The links in this article are Amazon affiliate links, so if you buy through one I get a small commission. It does not change the numbers and I have left in the two comparisons where a competitor beats me.
Step zero: turn it into one number
Price divided by terabytes. That is it.
- 12 TB at $299.99 is
299.99 / 12= $25.00/TB - 8 TB at $259 is
259 / 8= $32.38/TB - Three 8 TB drives for $211 is
211 / 24= $8.79/TB
For a bundle, add the capacities together first. Then ignore the advertised discount completely. “60% off” is measured against a price nobody was paying, and it is the single most reliable way to talk yourself into a bad buy. If you would rather not do it in your head, the storage calculator does it and compares against live listings.
The number on its own still means nothing. You need something to compare it to.
Today’s benchmark
Known-brand SATA drives only, because the cheapest drives on the whole site are SAS and most people cannot plug those in. “Floor” is the single cheapest listing. “Near floor” is how many listings sit within 10% of it, which matters more than people expect.

Read the “near floor” column before you read the floor. At 8 TB, 14 TB and 16 TB, exactly one listing sits within 10% of the cheapest price. That is not a market rate, that is one seller. If it sells out this afternoon, the real price for that capacity is the 25th percentile, which is $11 per TB higher at 8 TB. Quote the floor at somebody and you will be wrong within a week.
At 24 TB, five of fourteen listings are within 10% of the floor. Around $27 to $29 per TB there is a real cluster of drives at 24 TB rather than one seller, and a band with five listings in it is the more durable number of the two. Durable is relative, though, and I will come back to how relative in a moment.
Which leads to the thing I did not expect.
New is cheaper than used at 24 TB
Everyone in these threads treats recertified as the cheap route by definition. From 6 TB to 22 TB they are right: the used floor beats the new floor at every one of those capacities. The gap is not uniform though, and it is worth knowing where it is thin. It is 27.9% at 18 TB and 23.5% at 14 TB, but only 6.3% at 6 TB and 6.6% at 22 TB. At those two capacities you are taking on used-drive risk for a rounding error.
At 24 TB it inverts. A new Seagate Exos X24 at $649.99 works out at 649.99 / 24 = $27.08/TB, and the cheapest used 24 TB on the site is $27.50/TB. The new drive is cheaper than the used one, with a full manufacturer warranty attached.
Compare that up the curve and it gets worse for the mid capacities:

If you are buying capacity rather than a specific drive, a new 24 TB right now beats a used 18 TB or 20 TB on price per TB, on warranty, and on how many drive bays it costs you. Two used 12 TB drives still edge it on pure $/TB, at the cost of a second bay, a second thing that can fail, and 2020-era power-on hours.
I would not have guessed that, and neither would the threads. But I have to apply my own rule from two paragraphs up, because it bites here too: that $27.08 is one listing. It is one seller. The used side at 24 TB is the opposite, a cluster of five listings inside 10% of each other. So the used price here is a market and the new price is one drive.
I can show you exactly how little these numbers are worth, because I watched them move while I was writing. When I measured, the second cheapest new 24 TB was a Seagate Barracuda at $737.91, which is $30.75/TB. Eighty minutes later the same listing was $709.80, or $29.57/TB. Same drive, same seller, $28 off, no announcement. In the same eighty minutes a used 24 TB appeared at $29.54/TB that had not been in the catalogue at all. Nothing dramatic happened in the market. That is just what a capacity with fourteen listings in it does over one morning.
So take the shape and not the figure. At the top of the range the cheapest new drive can undercut every used one, which is worth knowing because nobody expects it. Whether it is true at the hour you go to buy is a thing you have to check, and the live rankings are there for exactly that. Anyone quoting you my $27.08 next month, including me, is quoting a number that stopped being true.
That cuts both ways and I would rather say it plainly: every figure in this article is a measurement, not a forecast, and the whole point of the six checks below is that they keep working after the numbers stop.
Eleven real deals, scored
These are the actual listings people posted, with my number next to theirs. Dollar deals first, because that is the market I track.

The first and the last two are the point. Every one of those buyers described their deal as looking good. One is a third of market and one is 24% above the floor, and neither buyer could tell, because neither had a number.
The three non-US deals
I only track Amazon.com in dollars, so I cannot score a euro or sterling listing honestly against the table above. Currency is the smaller problem: the EU and UK drive markets genuinely price differently, and converting my floor into pounds would be inventing a benchmark I do not have. So, with that stated plainly:
- 18 TB for £300 is £16.67/TB. Against a US floor of $28.64/TB it looks strong, but it is a different market and I am not going to pretend otherwise. Worth doing, with the usual seller checks.
- 28 TB factory recertified for 694€ is 24.79€/TB, and the poster’s instinct was “too good to be true so I would skip this”. Nothing about that price is impossible. My best new 24 TB is $27.08/TB and my best used 22 TB is $29.55/TB, so a recertified 28 TB in that range is the market, not a scam signal. The risk in that deal is the seller, not the price.
- 2x 6 TB for 300€ with 31,000 hours each is 25.00€/TB. That one I would walk away from regardless of exchange rate. My 6 TB floor is $24.67/TB with a stated warranty. He is paying the recertified-with-warranty rate for 2020 drives with 3.5 years of continuous runtime and no warranty at all.
The six checks
Price per TB catches most of it. These catch the rest, in the order the risk actually bites.
1. Convert to $/TB before you have an opinion
Covered above, and it settles more of these threads than everything else combined. Do it before you look at the brand, the reviews or the discount badge.
2. Compare against today, not against memory
Here is how far a remembered price can be from the truth. I pulled every listing for one exact model number, the Seagate ST8000NM0055, an 8 TB Exos 7E8. Same model, same capacity, same marketplace, same day:

That is a 4.7x spread on one drive, live right now. Sixteen listings, and the most expensive is not a better drive, it is just a worse listing. There is no such thing as “the price of a 8 TB Exos”. There is only the price of the listing in front of you, today.
This is also why “the 12’s usually go for nearly $400” is dangerous. It was true once. Today the cheapest 12 TB I track is $299.99 for a Seagate Exos X16, and that same ASIN carries a new offer at $499.45 alongside it.
3. Check the model number, not the title
Titles lie by accident more often than on purpose. Of the 9,170 listings I pull today, 154 have a title advertising three or more different capacities at one price: “SSD 120GB 128GB 240GB 250GB 256GB 720GB 960GB 2TB”, and worse. When a title does that, the price you are shown belongs to one variant and there is no way to know which from the page.
Find the manufacturer model number in the listing (ST24000NM000C, WUH722424ALE604, MG08ACA16TE) and search that. If the listing does not carry one, that is itself information. I have written up what fake and mislabelled listings look like, because I have had to hide several of them from my own catalogue.
4. “Renewed” is not “factory recertified”
This is the one that surprised me most in the data. Of the hard drive listings whose title carries any refurbishment word at all:
- 302 say “Renewed”
- 6 say “recertified”
- 6 say “refurbished”
- 5 say “certified refurbished”
Those overlap slightly, so the honest total is 311 distinct listings. The word the community uses, factory recertified, is on six of them. Amazon Renewed is Amazon’s own program: qualified by the seller or a third party, with Amazon’s guarantee behind it. A factory recertified drive went back to Seagate or Western Digital, was tested by them, and came out with a manufacturer warranty and a fresh SMART history.
Those are different products at different risk levels, sold under words that sound like synonyms. “eBay refurb tag” is a third thing again, as one buyer found:
“They came with 1 years warranties and eBay refurb tags, but clearly after smart testing that doesn’t prove they were sent in the ‘like-new’ condition I was expecting.”
If the listing will not say who did the refurbishing, assume it was the seller. I go through the whole risk picture in refurbished and used hard drives.
5. Ask what the warranty pays out, not how long it runs
This is the sharpest thing anyone said on the subject all month, and I have not seen it written up anywhere:
“I bought a manufacturer-recertified HGST 12TB from ServerPartDeals in February 2025 for about $165 … Their policy is: replacement with the same model if it’s in stock, otherwise a refund … The refund would be my original price (~$165). But the current market price for the same drive is now ~$400, more than double. So a refund wouldn’t come close to replacing it.”
In a rising market, a warranty that pays out at your original purchase price is not insurance. It is a cap on your loss at the wrong number. He paid $165; the cheapest 12 TB I can find today is $299.99. If that drive dies and they refund him, he is $135 short of replacing it and he did nothing wrong.
Two questions to ask before you buy, then:
- If the same model is out of stock, do I get a refund or a current-value replacement?
- Is there a stated warranty at all? Only 44% of the used hard drive listings I track state one. The other 56% say nothing, and nothing means nothing.
Once a drive is in service, what to do when it throws its first bad sector is the next question, and the payout above is why you want to know the answer before you need it.
6. Seller red flags, and what they are actually costing you
One buyer this month was asked, at checkout, for photographs of both sides of his credit card and his driving licence:
“Your authorization form is incomplete. There are documentations required, Copy of credit card (Front & Back) and Driver License for our credit department review to proceed with your order.”

I am not going to accuse anyone of anything, and I have only heard the buyer’s side. But price the trade. That order was a 20 TB Ultrastar at $600, which is $30.00/TB against my $31.00 floor. He was being asked to photograph his identity documents to save 3%, about $20, on a drive he could buy in two clicks.
That is the useful way to read a red flag. Not “is this seller dishonest”, which you usually cannot know, but “what is the discount actually worth, and is it worth this”. A private sale carries the same test. One buyer this month simply received the wrong drive:
“it was supposed to be a 8tb HGST drive, but I ended up with the 6tb Green WD instead”
Where I lose
Two of the deals above beat this site, and I would rather say so than have you find out.
GoHardDrive matched me to the cent. Their He10 10 TB at $260 is the same drive I list at $259.99. Not cheaper, not dearer. If you already have an account there and prefer their returns process, nothing I have is a reason to switch.
Seagate’s own website beat me by 15%. A 22 TB for $550 during a 10% sale is $25.00/TB. My best 22 TB is a recertified Exos X22 at $649.99, which is $29.55/TB with a 6 month warranty. Manufacturer sales are worth watching and I do not track them.
Being honest when I lose is the only reason to believe me when I win.
The short version
- Divide price by terabytes. Do it first, before you form an opinion.
- Compare against today’s number. The same 8 TB drive is on sale right now at a 4.7x price spread.
- Search the model number, not the title. 154 listings advertise three or more capacities at once.
- “Renewed” is not “factory recertified”. 302 listings say the first, 6 say the second.
- Ask what the warranty pays out. 56% of used listings do not state one at all.
- Price the red flag. Photographing your driving licence to save 3% is a bad trade.
Today’s floors are in the table above, and the live price per TB rankings update daily, which they need to: the 8 TB floor is one listing deep, and that listing will not be there forever. If you want the current picture on the market as a whole, buy now or wait is where I keep that.
