Best USB-C External SSDs

USB-C external SSDs combine fast transfer speeds with universal compatibility. Plug into any laptop, desktop, tablet, or gaming console with a USB-C port. This page ranks them by price per terabyte so you can find the fastest affordable external storage.

USB-C speed tiers

USB 3.2 Gen 1 (5 Gbps) caps at ~500 MB/s. USB 3.2 Gen 2 (10 Gbps) reaches ~1,000 MB/s. USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 (20 Gbps) pushes ~2,000 MB/s. Most portable SSDs use Gen 2 at 10 Gbps — fast enough that the drive, not the interface, is the bottleneck for everyday use.

Quick Verdict

Who this is for
Anyone who needs fast portable storage — photographers, video editors, students, travelers, and console gamers using external game storage.
What usually wins
A USB 3.2 Gen 2 (10 Gbps) portable SSD at 1–2 TB. Pay more for Gen 2x2 only if you regularly move 100+ GB files and your device supports 20 Gbps USB.
Prioritise
Price per TB at USB 3.2 Gen 2 speeds. Beyond that, build quality and size/weight for portability.

How to Choose

External SSDs are simple devices — here is what differentiates them.

USB generation

Gen 2 (10 Gbps) is the mainstream standard delivering ~1,000 MB/s. Gen 1 (5 Gbps) is noticeably slower. Gen 2x2 (20 Gbps) is faster but requires a compatible host port, which many laptops lack. Check your device specs before paying extra for speed you cannot use.

Capacity

500 GB is fine for file transfers and small projects. 1 TB suits most users. 2 TB is ideal for video work, large game libraries, or full-system backups. 4 TB portable SSDs exist but the per-TB cost is still premium.

Durability rating

IP55 or IP67 ratings mean water and dust resistance. Drop ratings (typically 2–3 meters) protect against accidental falls. If the drive lives on your desk, this does not matter. If it lives in your backpack, it does.

Encryption

Some external SSDs include hardware encryption with a companion app (Samsung T7 Touch, SanDisk Extreme with password protection). Useful for sensitive data on a portable drive — but macOS FileVault or BitLocker can also encrypt external drives in software.
