I track the price per terabyte of every hard drive on Amazon.com every day. This is where the numbers landed in late August 2026. Every figure below is from the live dataset on 25 August 2026, filtered to new, internal 3.5-inch SATA drives, priced in US dollars.

If you want the number that updates itself, the cheapest drives per TB page is generated from live data. This post is the monthly snapshot, so you have a fixed number to point at.

The median new 3.5-inch drive costs $44 to $53 per TB, whatever the capacity.
Bigger is not cheaper per TB anymore. The old rule is dead for now.
The best genuine buy on the board is the 24TB Seagate Exos X24 at $27.92/TB.
The single cheapest listing at most capacities is a no-name brand. I would not buy those.

Bigger is no longer cheaper per TB

Look down the median column. It does not slope down. It wobbles between $44 and $53 the whole way, and the 8TB median ($53.41) is the single most expensive per terabyte on the board. The two cheapest capacities on a median basis are 18TB and 24TB, both around $44.

For years the advice was “buy the biggest drive you can, it is cheapest per TB.” In August 2026 that is no longer true as a rule. It is only true for a handful of specific models. If you buy on the rule of thumb instead of the actual number, you will overpay.

That also matters when you are mixing drive sizes in a NAS, where the cost per usable terabyte reorders the drives again.

The best genuine buys right now

If I were spending my own money this month:

24TB Seagate Exos X24, about $27.92/TB. This is the cheapest reputable per-TB number on the entire board, and it is an enterprise CMR drive with a 5-year warranty. If you need the capacity, this is the buy.
12TB HGST Ultrastar, about $28.33/TB. The value pick if 24TB is more than you need. Enterprise-class, and priced like a bargain.
8TB Seagate BarraCuda, about $31.25/TB. The floor for a small drive, though note the BarraCuda is a desktop drive, not a NAS drive. Fine for a single-drive backup, less ideal for an array.

Why the cheapest listing is usually a trap

Here is the part the median hides. At most capacities the very cheapest price-per-TB listing on Amazon.com is not a real deal. In August 2026 the cheapest 20TB listing was an “MDD MAXDIGITALDATA” drive at $25/TB, and the cheapest 18TB was a “Water Panther” at $30.50/TB. At other tiers it was an unbranded “Generic” or “Genuine Original” listing.

These are the listings most likely to be fake-capacity or gray-market, and they are exactly the ones I keep out of the reputable column above. The reputable-brand floor is usually $5 to $10 more per TB. That gap is the price of a drive that actually holds the capacity on the label.
