Refurbished and Used Hard Drives in 2026: What the Numbers Actually Say (and the Checks to Run Before You Pay)
Someone on r/DataHoarder bought a drive last month and then asked the thread whether they had been ripped off.
“I got swept up by what looked like a good Price per Terabyte in this current market… per the SMART report, this drive came with 31k hours already on it; roughly 75% of it’s useful life gone already.”

They did the price-per-TB math correctly. That is the part everyone gets right. What they had no way to check was everything the division leaves out: hours on the clock, whether it was SMR, and whether anyone would stand behind it if it died in a month. Further down that same thread they said the thing that made me write this:
“The average hours bought used is a metric I couldn’t find and gives me a lot more comfort.”
They are right that it is not published. I cannot publish it either, and I will say so plainly further down. But I can publish something nobody else has, because I track every drive listing on Amazon.com and recompute price per terabyte every day: what the used market actually costs, and what the warranty column does to that price.
The warranty answer is backwards from what everyone assumes, and it is the most actionable thing on this page. Skip to it if you like.
Everything below is live data pulled on 4 August 2026: 906 internal 3.5” SATA hard drives at 4 TB and above, listed on Amazon.com. 477 new, 429 used or recertified. 865 of those 906 listings were repriced today.
First, the size of the discount
People say “used is cheaper” and stop there. Here is the number.

Used runs at 62% to 75% of new, at every single capacity, with no exception. Call it a third off.
Two things worth reading off that table before I move on.
The discount is widest in the middle capacities (8 TB to 16 TB, where used is 62-65% of new) and narrowest at 18 to 24 TB (73-75%). That is the opposite of what most people expect. At 22 TB you are paying only a 25% premium for a brand new, fully warrantied drive, which is genuinely worth considering. At 8 TB you are paying a 61% premium for new, which mostly is not.
The n columns matter. The 18 TB through 28 TB rows have 6 to 22 listings each. Those medians are real, but two listings moving shifts the middle. Treat 4 TB through 16 TB as solid ground.
And a sanity check against the community’s own figure. In a thread on Newegg last week, u/DTFpanda wrote:
“Decent deals for new hard drives don’t exist anywhere. $15-20 per TB used to be the standard for new hard drives. Now they are $40+ per TB thanks to AI/data centers/corruption. Used is the way to go, eBay or serverpartdeals.com”
The “$40+ per TB” is accurate. My new median bottoms out at $39.13/TB in the 22-24 TB tier and is above $40 everywhere else. When the crowd’s rule of thumb checks out, it is worth saying so.
The warranty inversion, which is the actual point of this page
Here is where the received wisdom breaks.
Everyone buys used on the assumption that you strip protection to get the price down. No warranty is the cheap option; a warranty is the thing you pay extra for. That is how it works almost everywhere else you spend money.
Group my 429 used listings by the warranty they actually carry:

The used drives with a five-year warranty are $7.33/TB cheaper than the used drives with no warranty at all. That is a 20% discount for the better-covered drive.
Now, I do not want to sell you a number I have not checked, so I went looking for the boring explanation, and I found part of one. The no-warranty pile skews small (median capacity 8 TB) and the 60-month pile skews large (median capacity 12 TB). Bigger drives are cheaper per TB anyway. So some of that $7.33 is just capacity mix, not warranty.
So I ran it again inside each capacity tier, comparing like with like. Used listings only, no warranty against 24 months or more, same capacity band:

The effect is real, it survives the control, and it lands on -18% three times in a row through the middle of the market. From 6 TB to 16 TB, which is where most home builders actually shop, the used drive with a two-year-plus warranty is about a fifth cheaper per terabyte than the identical-capacity used drive with nothing behind it.
At the extremes it washes out. Below 6 TB and above 18 TB the two groups price the same, within noise. So the honest version of this finding is narrower than the raw table suggests, and better, because it points at a specific range and a specific action.
What that is worth in dollars

You are not paying $78 for the warranty. You are being paid $78 to take it.
Why would this be true?
I am guessing here and I will flag it as a guess, but the shape of the data suggests an answer.
The listings with real warranties are dominated by volume recertifiers: outfits buying data-centre pulls by the pallet, testing them, resetting the SMART counters and selling at scale under their own name. One of them, MDD MaxDigitalData, is 48 of my 86 listings at 24 months or more, all on its own. Western Digital and Seagate branded stock accounts for another 29. That is a concentrated, competitive market with inventory to move, and the warranty costs those sellers a predictable percentage they have already priced in.
The no-warranty band looks completely different: 235 listings, led by Western Digital (88) and Seagate (67), then a long tail of single units under enterprise part numbers from HP, Dell and Hitachi. Nobody in that tail is competing on price with anybody. A lot of them are simply mispriced upward, and the tail is where mispricing lives.
I can show you that directly. In the 10 to 12 TB band, the most expensive no-warranty used listings today are $79.70/TB, $75.31/TB and $64.00/TB. The warrantied median in that same band is $29.17/TB. Those are not risky bargains. They are used drives priced above new ones with nothing at all behind them, and there are enough of them to drag the whole no-warranty median up.
Only 194 of my 429 used listings carry any warranty at all, and only 86 carry 24 months or more. So the good stuff is a minority of the used market, which is exactly why sorting by price alone walks you into the bad half.
What a warrantied used drive costs today
Concrete, from this morning’s data. These are the cheapest per TB in their band that carry 24 months or more:
- 8 TB, $259.99, 60-month warranty, $32.50/TB. The no-warranty 6-8 TB median is $41.14/TB.
- 12 TB, $329.99, 36-month warranty, $27.50/TB. A 60-month HC520 at the same price is also live today.
- 14 TB, $339.00, 24-month warranty, $24.21/TB. That is the cheapest warrantied drive per terabyte on the whole board.
- 16 TB, $469.99, 36-month warranty, $29.37/TB. Or a Seagate Exos X16 at $499.99 with 24 months if you want a name you know, at $31.25/TB.
- 18 TB, $449.99, 60-month warranty, $25.00/TB. Five years of cover works out at $5.00 per TB per warranty-year, which is the best number on this page.

Power-on hours: the number nobody publishes, including me
u/tubaman23 wanted an average. Let me be straight about what I have and what I do not.
I cannot give you one. Power-on hours are not in any listing. They live on the drive, in SMART, and you find them out after the box arrives. No aggregator can tell you this, and anyone who publishes a confident average is estimating.
What exists is the field estimate from people who buy used drives constantly, and it is consistent enough to be worth repeating with attribution:
“Used drives on places like eBay almost always have 30k+ hours on them. I think my average from buying on there is around 37k.”

So: 30,000 to 37,000 hours is the working assumption for eBay and liquidation stock. That is three and a half to four and a bit years of continuous running. If a private-sale listing does not show you SMART, assume you are in that range and price accordingly.
Factory recertified is a different animal. When a manufacturer recertifies a drive, the counters are typically reset, and the good sellers say so:
“0 hours/0 writes since recerification by Seagate. Best possible scenario.”

Worth knowing: a reset counter tells you the drive passed the recertifier’s test bench. It does not tell you what the drive did before that. Those are different claims and listings blur them constantly.
Do hours actually predict failure?
This is genuinely contested, and the best answer in the whole harvest is the one that sidesteps the question:
“Hours is not necessarily a good way to tell how reliable a drive will be… A drive is only guaranteed as long as its warranty. If you buy a drive with 100k hours, but a 5 year warranty, you can expect to get 5 years out of using a hard drive.”

That is the right frame, and my data is the numerical version of it. Buy the warranty, not the SMART report. Hours are a probability you cannot verify before purchase. A warranty is a contract you can read before purchase. And in the 6 TB to 16 TB range the contract is currently the cheaper of the two.
The counterweight, from people running huge piles of ancient drives:
“I’ve got 150TB+ in a bunch of 10+ year old SAS drives in dual vdev draid2 that I buy off ebay and run in my garage at 115F all summer long. Been doing this for at least 10 years. Never lost data. Drives yes, but data no. So, go for it. Just make sure to have redundancy and spares.”

Read that last sentence twice. It is not “old drives are fine”. It is “old drives are fine if you have redundancy and spares”. The person losing sleep over 31k hours on a single unprotected drive and the person shrugging at 150 TB of decade-old SAS are both correct, because they are describing different setups.
The five checks, in the order that matters
This is the community’s own checklist, reordered by how much each one actually protects you.
1. Warranty length, in months. First, not last. It is the only pre-purchase fact you can verify with certainty, it is the cheapest half of the used market anyway in the middle capacities, and it converts an unknowable failure probability into a known contract length. If a listing does not state a warranty, treat it as zero.
2. CMR or SMR. This is the ambush that catches newcomers, and it is not always disclosed:
“Pretty sure that model number is also an SMR drive… they don’t do well in file servers because of how SMR works.”

Look up the exact model number, not the product family, because manufacturers have shipped both under one name. CMR vs SMR covers which is which and when SMR is genuinely fine.
3. SMART, before money changes hands, for private sales. For a marketplace or local pickup, demand it:
“I’d be verifying SMART data with a current long test (screenshots with serial number) before handing over any cash. Not just hours and the power ons, but how many head retracts and any pending sectors?”

The serial number in the screenshot is the part people forget. Without it you are looking at a SMART report for some drive, not necessarily this drive. Pending and reallocated sectors are worth more attention than the hours figure everybody fixates on.
4. The returns route. This is what actually makes used buying low-risk, and it is why buying used on a major platform is a different proposition from buying used from a stranger:
“eBay’s return policy is fantastic. Amazon-level when it comes to ‘not as described’ or ‘defective’. It does not matter if the seller shows does not accept returns.”

A DOA drive from a volume recertifier is a replacement, not a reason to abandon the strategy. One bad drive out of two is bad luck, not a pattern.
5. Preclear or burn-in, before you trust it with anything. Every used drive, no exceptions. Full surface write and verify. Do it in the chassis if you can, because some USB docks do not pass SMART data through properly. Infant mortality is the biggest single risk with used drives, and a burn-in is how you make it happen on your schedule instead of at 2am three weeks from now.
And the thing that sits underneath all five: redundancy plus a cold spare. The r/unRAID debate about which disk matters most lands on a good rule. Put the fully warrantied new drive at parity, run the recerts as data. Parity is the one that has to be right when something else fails.
Where people buy, and what I can and cannot help with
I should be straight about my own scope. HDDHunt tracks Amazon.com only. That is a deliberate choice, and it means I have nothing useful to say about the prices at the resellers this community names constantly: GoHardDrive, ServerPartDeals, Newegg, or the eBay data-centre liquidators. Those are real options and several are cheaper than Amazon on any given day. I just cannot verify their prices, so I will not pretend to.

That thread names datablocks.dev, truebase.nl, Renewtech, servershop24.de and Western Digital’s own recertified store, and the frustration in it is genuine. Everything on this page about warranty and SMART still applies. The prices do not.
What I can do is the Amazon.com half, daily, with the math shown.
The part where I admit what is in my own machine
I run Unraid, and it is a hodgepodge. A pile of WD Reds, plus some cheap SMR drives that by my own advice above should probably not be in there. They went in because they were cheap and storage is not.
That is the whole tension this site lives in. I am too tight to keep buying new drives, so I plan for them to fail instead: parity, spares, and an acceptance that a drive dying is a Tuesday rather than a disaster. On hot days the temperature warnings pile up around 118F (48C) and Unraid copes fine.
I am not going to tell you the risk is zero. I bought the cheap drives too. What I will tell you is that after pulling these numbers, the thing I would change about my own buying is simple: stop treating the warranty column as a luxury upsell. In the capacities I actually buy, it is not costing me anything. It is saving me about 18%.
Bottom line
As of 4 August 2026, on Amazon.com, internal 3.5” SATA drives:
- Used and recertified drives cost 62% to 75% of new, at every capacity from 4 TB to 28 TB. No exceptions.
- The used discount is deepest at 8 to 16 TB and shallowest at 18 to 24 TB, where new is only about 25% more.
- Buy the used drive with the warranty. From 6 TB to 16 TB it is 18% cheaper per TB than the same-capacity drive with no warranty, not more expensive. Below 6 TB and above 18 TB the two price the same, so this is a middle-of-the-market rule.
- Only 45% of used listings carry any warranty, and only 20% carry two years or more. Sorting by price alone lands you in the wrong half.
- Assume 30k to 37k power-on hours on eBay and liquidation stock unless a SMART report says otherwise. Nobody publishes this figure, including me, and that is a field estimate rather than a measurement.
- Preclear everything, and keep a cold spare. Redundancy is what turns a used-drive strategy from a gamble into arithmetic.
