How to Tell a Real Drive Listing From a Bad One (2026): What I Found Auditing My Own Catalogue

I could write the usual answer to this. Check the seller, check the reviews, use buyer protection.
Instead I am going to show you what I found when I audited my own catalogue, because I run a price comparison site and I had a motorcycle part ranked as the cheapest hard drive on it.
Everything below is from the live Amazon.com catalogue I track, 8,663 listings, checked on 7 August 2026.
The thing worth saying first: fakes are not the main risk
For 3.5” internal hard drives, outright counterfeits are rare. What actually burns people is omission, and the community works this out for themselves every time:
“Nowhere on the listing did it attest to the Power on Hours and I admittedly was neglectful in looking for that.”

That is the honest verdict, and the reply underneath is the honest qualifier:
“Could the seller have neglected providing that information on purpose in hopes that someone like you purchased it? Sure.”

Nothing in that transaction was fake. Everything in it was true. It was just not complete, and the incompleteness was worth money to somebody.
There is a second risk nobody warns you about, and it is the one I am uniquely placed to describe: the data can simply be wrong, on my site and on every other one.
I had a motorcycle footpeg ranked as the cheapest hard drive on my site
On 6 August I got moderation access to my own catalogue and spent a session removing bad listings by hand. Nineteen came out. They fell into three groups, and the groups matter because they have completely different causes.
One: not a drive at all
HardDrive P77-6005GB: Footpeg Mount Clamps 1.5" Bar Black. $117.86 for a piece of aluminium that bolts to a motorcycle.
The brand really is called “HardDrive”. The part number is P77-6005GB. My pipeline read 6005GB as a 6 TB capacity, divided $117.86 by 6, and got $19.63/TB, which was the cheapest price per terabyte on the entire site.
So it sat at position 1 of my cheapest-per-TB page, and it was emitted as position: 1 in that page’s structured data, with my affiliate link on it.
I want to be precise about why that happened, because the lesson generalises. A price-per-terabyte sort rewards whatever is wrong. Any listing with an inflated capacity gets a deflated $/TB, and a deflated $/TB floats it to the top of an ascending sort. The errors do not scatter randomly through the table. They concentrate exactly where you are looking.
Two: real products, wrong number
Twelve legitimate listings from real companies where the title said one capacity and my data said another. A WD Elements 2 TB classified as 6 TB. A Transcend 500 GB portable classified as 2 TB. A TEAMGROUP 1 TB as 2 TB.
Every single one was inflated. Never once deflated. Which is not a coincidence either, for the same reason as above: a deflated capacity sinks a listing out of sight, so you never notice it, while an inflated one is promoted to the top of the page.
One detail settles what kind of bug this is. The WD Elements listing, ASIN B06W55K9N6, appears on five Amazon marketplaces. It is classified 2,000 GB on the UK, Polish, Italian and Canadian sites, and it was classified 6,000 GB on the US one. Same product, same title, four right and one wrong. That is my pipeline, not the seller.
Three: capacity claims I did not believe
Six no-name listings whose price per TB was far below anything a known brand sells at. A “16 TB portable USB drive for $110”, which is $6.88/TB, sitting at position 1 of all 4,915 hard drives, when the cheapest known-brand hard drive at 8 TB and above that day was $21.12/TB and a real 16 TB drive starts around $399. The same seller had a 2 TB portable SSD at $35, when the cheapest known-brand SSD was $69.75/TB.
That is the classic flash-fraud pattern: a small controller reporting a large capacity. No parser fix helps, because the title and the data agree. The seller is the one lying.
The one I got wrong
I hid those six on a plausibility rule I had to calibrate by hand, and I got one of them wrong.
An HP 625140-001 3 TB at $8.33/TB. It looked impossible. It is not. It is a genuine decade-old OEM enterprise drive, and old enterprise pulls really are that cheap. I reversed it, and it is back in the catalogue today at exactly that price, which you can go and look at.
I am telling you this because it is the same mistake you are about to make. “Too cheap to be real” is a feeling, not a test. In this market it is wrong often enough to matter, and I got it wrong with the whole distribution in front of me.
What happened after I cleared them out
The prediction I wrote down was that the cheap tier would refill within days, because a catalogue is a queue and not a fixed set.
One day later, it has not. Checking today:

One day is not a fair test of a prediction about refill rates, and I will look again. But it has not refilled, and I am not going to write that it did because it made a better story.
The automated check is wrong more often than it is right
Here is the part I did not expect, and it is the most useful thing on this page.
The obvious way to catch bad data at scale is to compare what the title claims against what the pipeline classified, and flag the disagreements. I ran exactly that across all 8,663 listings. It flagged 45.
Then I read the 22 that were inflated, one at a time. About six are genuine errors. Here is what the rest were:
Interface speeds read as capacity. TDKAEU 1Pcs for ST16000NM004J 16T 3.5'' 7.2K 12GB SAS 16TB Enterprise Hard Drive. The 12GB is a 12 Gb/s SAS link. The drive really is 16 TB. My check was the thing that was wrong.
European decimal points. SAMSUNG SSD PM893 SATA 2.5" 7.680GB. That is not 7.68 GB, it is 7,680 GB. My classification of 7.7 TB is correct and my check flagged it anyway.
Multi-packs, correctly summed. KOOTION 5 Pack 64GB USB 2.0 Flash Drive classified as 320 GB. Five times sixty-four. Right answer, flagged as a contradiction. Same for a SanDisk 3-pack of 32 GB at 96 GB.
Variant listings. NLPBFD Internal OEM Hard Drive 4TB,6TB,8TB,10TB,12TB,16TB,NAS,RAID and two near-identical listings under different random brand names. One page, six capacities, one price shown. There are 171 listings in my catalogue advertising three or more capacities in a single title. Nothing about them is checkable from the outside.
The genuine ones left over are boring by comparison: an HGST Ultrastar HE8 where the family name won against the 6000GB in the title, a WD 4 TB Elements read as 6 TB, a Toshiba 2 TB Canvio read as 4 TB, a Dell 900 GB rounded up to 1 TB, an ADATA 1 TB read as 1.9 TB, an Axiom 1.2 TB read as 2 TB.
So the lesson is not “trust the algorithm”. It is that a suspicious-looking listing usually has a boring explanation, and finding it takes a human thirty seconds. That applies to my check and it applies to your instinct.
Why the cheapest storage on my site is not a drive
Sort my whole catalogue by price per terabyte today and the top of the list is not a hard drive at all. It is tape.

Nothing here is a scam. Tape capacities are conventionally quoted compressed. An LTO-7 cartridge holds 6 TB natively and about 15 TB if your data compresses at the assumed ratio, which media files will not. My pipeline takes the larger number, so tape looks about two and a half times cheaper than it is for the kind of data most people reading this are storing.
And look at that middle row closely. It says “15 TB Native/6TB Compressed”, which is backwards. LTO-7 is 6 TB native. The listing itself has the two numbers the wrong way round, and my parser believed it.
The general lesson is worth more than the tape trivia: a number can be wrong without anybody lying. Vendor conventions, marketing capacities and honest typos all end up in the same column as the actual frauds, and they all look identical when sorted by price.
The five-second check that resolves most threads
Every “is this legit?” thread I read would have been settled in seconds by one question: how does this price per terabyte compare with everything else at the same capacity?
Nobody suggests it, and it is the check a price comparison site exists to make possible. So here is the distribution, internal 3.5” hard drives on Amazon.com, all conditions, 7 August 2026:

Read it like this. Between the 25th percentile and the median is an ordinary good deal. Below the bottom-5% column you are looking at something unusual, and unusual has three explanations: a genuine old enterprise pull, a data error, or a lie. Go and find out which. Do not assume the third one and do not assume the first.
Someone in the German thread had already done this arithmetic and still could not act on it:
“24,79€ per TB is the best I’ve seen this year. […] To me it looks like too good to be true so I would skip this.”
They talked themselves out of an ordinary deal because they had the number and no distribution to check it against. That is the whole gap this table fills. The good price per TB benchmark has the same thing split by new and used.
The fields that matter, and what a blank one means
Warranty months. This is the one sellers quietly leave out, and the community notices:
“There is no information about warranty in the description.”

In my catalogue today, 3,116 of 4,808 hard drive listings state no warranty at all, which is 65%. Treat a blank warranty as zero, always. And it is not the expensive option: used drives carrying a long warranty are cheaper per terabyte than used drives with none, by about 18% in the 6 to 16 TB range.
Interface. SATA or SAS. A SAS drive will not plug into an ordinary motherboard, it needs an HBA, and this is not a hypothetical trap: of the 25 cheapest hard drives at 8 TB and above in my catalogue right now, 8 are SAS. A third of the apparent bargains at the cheap end are drives most buyers cannot use. Listings get this wrong in both directions too:
“I actually stumbled upon these listings about two days prior… and contacted the seller because originally they were listed as SAS drives, yet the labels said SATA. The seller then corrected the listings to SATA at my inquiry.”

CMR or SMR, by exact model number, not product family. Manufacturers have shipped both under one name. CMR vs SMR covers which is which.
Condition and power-on hours. If it says used and does not say hours, assume the field average, which people who buy constantly put at 30,000 to 37,000.
What is inside the enclosure, for anything external:
“I’d never buy a 2nd hand HDD on Amazon, specially if I don’t know what brand HDD is in the case.”

Fair, though the counterpoint in that thread is also fair: white-label enclosures are usually a real drive from one of the three manufacturers, bought cheap and rebadged. You just cannot know which one until you open it.
How the community actually de-risks this, and where it fails
The settled position is that platform buyer protection makes the downside small, so the real cost of a bad listing is wasted time and a burn-in cycle rather than lost money. The best worked example I found:
“Other listings shows data center liquidation. Business lookup appears to be a data center. They offer local pickup for the one large item (which scammers rarely do). Also the fact that there are so many buyers (36 already sold) means that eBay buyers protections are basically guaranteed.”

That is genuinely good reasoning: seller pattern, business identity, local pickup offered, and volume already sold.
The protection is not absolute, though, and the counter-example in that same thread is worth knowing about:
“There is a new scam out there where protection may not help. A seller ships some random thing to an address in your city (a worthless thing, could be bag of dirt) via Fedex. The delivery is marked as delivered in tracking… then when you report item not received the case is closed in seller favor.”

I have not verified that pattern myself. I am repeating it as a reported claim rather than a confirmed one, which is exactly the standard I would want applied to anything I write.
The first 48 hours, which is where the real check happens
Nothing above tells you whether the drive is good. Only the drive can do that.
- Read SMART before you write anything to it. Power-on hours, reallocated sectors, pending sectors. If the hours contradict the listing, you have a return-window decision to make while you still have the window.
- Full surface write and verify. Preclear, badblocks, whatever your platform calls it. This is the only test that catches a fake capacity, because a fake reports the right size and fails when you actually fill it.
- Do it in the chassis if you can. Some USB docks do not pass SMART through properly.
- Diarise the return date. A 30 day window and a 20 hour burn-in are compatible. A 30 day window and “I will get to it” are not.
That order matters. Infant mortality and fake capacity are both caught by step 2, and step 2 is the one people skip.
What I did about my own data
The nineteen listings are hidden, keyed by marketplace and product ID so they stay hidden through future fetches, and every one is logged with the reason and the command to reverse it. The twelve mis-parsed ones are marked for unhiding once the capacity parser is fixed, because they are real products that deserve to be listed correctly rather than removed.
That is the honest state of it: the symptom is handled, the cause is not fixed yet. I would rather say that than let you assume a comparison site is a clean dataset. Mine is not. Nobody’s is.
Bottom line
- Fakes are rare in 3.5” hard drives. Omission and bad data are common. Read for what is missing, not just what is claimed.
- Sorting by price per TB promotes every error to the top of the page, on my site and everyone else’s. The cheapest row is the least trustworthy row by construction.
- Check the price against the distribution for that capacity, not against your instinct. Below the bottom 5% means investigate, not walk away and not buy.
- “Too cheap to be real” is wrong often enough to matter. I hid a genuine HP 3 TB at $8.33/TB and had to put it back.
- A blank warranty is a zero warranty, and 65% of the hard drive listings I track are blank.
- Check the interface. 8 of the 25 cheapest drives at 8 TB+ are SAS and need an HBA.
- The real test is a full surface write in the first 48 hours, inside the return window.
